MotoConcepts Racing: ATLANTA 1 SX Report
SPOKANE, WA (February 21, 2015) – As the host of the eighth round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series, the Georgia Dome in Atlanta Georgia succeeded its famous reputation as one of the most exciting stop of the year. The stadium was in no shortage of supercross fans whose presence ensured another exciting night of racing. With riders in both the 250 and 450 Main events, the Smartop MotoConcepts team knew they had their work cut out for them. Rider Mike Alessi (#800/450) spent the week with his newly appointed trainer; in attempt rehabilitate the damaged cartridge in his knee. Meanwhile, Smartop rider Vince Friese (#45/250) was looking to capitalize on his week seven performance in Dallas, TX that landed him a sixth place finish in the Main event.
Both of the riders would finish their night with a checkered flag in the main event but it was not an easy road for one. With a holeshot in the first 250 Heat race, Vince Friese led the majority of the race, faltering only once as J. Savatgy made a pass for 1ST on the last lap of the race. The first 450 Heat race proved to be more challenging for the 800 bike of Mike Alessi. After a bad start and a 10th place finish in the Heat race, Alessi would be transferred to the Semi, where a third place finish, close behind Short and Seely, granted him a spot in the Main Event.
During the 250 Main event, Friese followed up his Heat race holeshot with a 3rd place start. Friese would finish out the night in 6th after a heated battle for spots 5-7 between Savatgy and Lemoine. With an uncharacteristic start in the 450 Main, Alessi found himself stuck in the back of the pack for most of the race. He was able stay steady and finish the race in 13th, which Alessi and the team view as a positive outcome given his post-surgery condition. Both Friese and Alessi are looking to improve on their results as they prepare for the second leg of consecutive races at the Georgia dome.
