Livingston, CA. (January 12, 2016) - 51FIFTY Energy Drink Yamaha began the 2016 season with a solid start at Anaheim. The teams two new riders, Zach Bell (#65) and rookie Hayden Mellross (#72), both had solid performances on their new Yamaha YZ250Fs with each rider making the Main Event.
In arguably one of the most impressive 250 rides of the night, Hayden Mellross rode solid in "B" practice during the day and then put his nerves to rest with a good start in Heat 1. Mellross got a good jump out of the gate in Heat #1 and stayed up front with the leaders. With mechanic Cody Leighton keeping Hayden informed on his pit board, Hayden put himself in a solid qualifying spot to punch a ticket directly into the Main.
In his first-ever Supercross race, Mellross showed speed and consistency beyond his years running inside the top 10 for most of the Main, eventually finishing an impressive 11th. "I'm so relieved to finish my first Supercross here in the states", exclaimed Mellross. "Most of my family was here from Australia and I'm glad I was able to put in a solid for them, the team, and for myself. It was a dream come true to finally race Supercross, I'm proud of how I rode and am confident I'll improve as the season progresses. Just a great night overall!"
Zach Bell returned to Supercross after a long layoff and on a new bike. Bell rode solid throughout the day but in Heat Race #1 was forced onto a Tuff Block, moved outside the Top 9 and ultimately into the LCQ. Providing good camera TV time for his sponsors, Zach lead the LCQ before a big bobble exiting the whoops caused him to jump off the side of the large triple. Zach stayed calm, powered back on the track and into 3rd, qualifying for the Main.
"I had basically the last gate pick and tangled with another rider off the start that put me even further back," said Zach Bell. "My speed is there and I passed up to about 11th before running off the track. Not the finish I expect of myself (15th) but great to be back racing again and am looking forward to San Diego."
The party at the 51FIFTY Energy Drink Yamaha pits was larger than ever as fans enjoyed an interactive photo booth with 51FFITY models and a live DJ. The pit party was also a great way for fans to learn about 51FIFTY's unique "Race For Autism" program bringing Autism awareness to the action sports community.
