Livingston, CA. (January 19, 2016) - 51FIFTY Energy Drink Yamaha looked to carry their momentum into round 2 at Petco Park. Zach Bell and Hayden Mellross took pointers from the opener and put in a strong week of testing.
After an 11th place in the Main at Anaheim 1 in his first Supercross, rookie Hayden Mellross was set to carry the flag for the team with teammate Zach Bell out for the night. With a great start in Heat 1, very nearly pulling the holeshot on his Twisted Development-tuned YZ250F, Hayden ran Top 3 before being passed by Jimmy Decotis. The 20-year old Australian finished 4th in only his 2nd-ever Heat Race and was off to the Main with a great gate pick.
When the gate dropped for the Main, the #72 machine was once again up front. Hayden came around the first corner in 3rd and was ready to run the pace at the front. A few turns in, another rider moved Hayden off the track forcing him to maneuver his way in between rhythm lanes. He jumped back onto the track, but the soft dirt on the side of the triple jump sucked up his bike and caused him to crash. After remounting, Hayden never quit and charged until another mishap in the whoops dropped him further where he would finish 21st. The result not an indicator of the speed shown throughout the day.
"My starts were on point all night," says Hayden. "Our bike is so good and I'm glad I was able to run up front for a while. You live and you learn, that's all part of being a rookie. Each week we're making improvements and I'm confident the best is yet to come."
Unfortunately for Zach Bell, he had a practice crash after catching a knuckle on a tricky dragon back section. Determined, the #65 Yamaha was out on the track Saturday morning for first practice; however, the decision was made to sit out. Zach remained at the track all day, signing autographs for fans, and partaking in the 51FIFTY /Race For Autism Pit Party before watching the race with owner Carlos Vieira.
